Yes, you can keep a Power7 system running in 2026 -- a real, if shrinking, population of them still is. But 'keep it running' means something more constrained on Power7 than on Power8 or Power9, because both the hardware and the software support layers are already past IBM's standard end date. Third-party maintenance (TPM)

A mature TPM industry supports legacy IBM Power hardware, including Power7, well past IBM's own end-of-service date. This is the critical limitation for Power7 specifically: TPM keeps the physical hardware running, but it cannot restore IBM's IBM i 7.3 patch stream past its September 2028 Service Extension deadline. On that date, there is no IBM support path for IBM i on Power7 at any price, TPM or otherwise.

Firmware and security considerations

IBM's own firmware (system microcode) updates for Power7 stopped at each model's end-of-support date -- 2019 for standard Power7, 2020 for the POWER7+ refresh. Any firmware-level vulnerability disclosed since then has not been patched by IBM on Power7 hardware. Combined with IBM i 7.3's own support trajectory, treat a Power7 system as running on a frozen, unpatched software and firmware baseline, not a maintained one, regardless of hardware uptime.

Network isolation as a compensating control

Because firmware and OS patching are effectively frozen, network-layer isolation becomes a more important compensating control than it would be on current hardware: restricting a Power7 system's network exposure to only what is operationally necessary, segmenting it from general-purpose networks, and tightening perimeter controls around it materially reduce the practical risk of an unpatched vulnerability being exploited.

Backup, HA, and DR on Power7

If you are extending Power7's life, backup and disaster-recovery posture is non-negotiable. With IBM no longer shipping parts or firmware fixes, an unrecoverable hardware failure is a genuine business risk. At minimum: verify your IBM i save strategy (full system saves, not just library saves) is current and tested; confirm any PowerHA or logical replication setup does not depend on a second unsupported Power7 system as its only failover target; and keep an offline, verified backup path.
