Power7 Migration Paths

The real paths off IBM Power7: through Power8, Power9, or Power10, all the way to Power11 -- and how to choose a landing generation without rewriting your applications.

There is no in-place upgrade from Power7 -- every route forward is a hardware refresh (or a move to IBM's cloud). The good news for planning: IBM Power maintains strong binary compatibility across generations, so an IBM i, AIX, or Linux workload built for Power7 runs on Power8, Power9, Power10, or Power11 without a rewrite. The real decision is how far to jump in one move, not whether the applications survive it.

The four landing generations

Power7 → Power8

The smallest hardware jump. Power8 is itself now past its own IBM end-of-support window on every current model, so this is a bridge, not a destination -- it only extends the software ceiling to IBM i 7.4.

Power7 → Power9

A larger jump onto hardware with more runway, commonly available on the used/refurbished market. Ceiling: IBM i 7.5 -- does not reach the current IBM i 7.6 release.

Power7 → Power10

Skips two full generations, lands on hardware that supports IBM i 7.6 (the current-generation-adjacent release), and remains fully sold and supported by IBM alongside Power11.

Power7 → Power11

IBM's current shipping generation. The furthest single jump from Power7, with the longest runway before the next forced decision.

Why skipping generations makes sense here

Because Power7 is so far behind, a Power7-to-Power8 or Power7-to-Power9 migration mostly just moves the goalposts a few years without solving the underlying problem: you would still be migrating off unsupported or soon-to-be-unsupported hardware within a relatively short horizon. For most Power7 operators making an active decision in 2026, jumping directly to Power10 or Power11 avoids a second disruptive migration project in the near term, at a higher upfront cost than a used Power8 or Power9 system.

Used vs. new hardware economics

Power8 and Power9 hardware are both now available in volume on the used and refurbished market, often at a fraction of new Power10 or Power11 pricing. The tradeoff is the same one that put you here in the first place: used Power8/Power9 hardware is itself progressively closer to its own end-of-support date, and buying it re-starts the same clock on a shorter fuse. Weigh the used-hardware discount honestly against how many years of runway you actually need.

Migrating without rewriting applications

For IBM i and AIX shops, the practical migration work is rarely the application code itself -- it is the surrounding infrastructure: current HMC compatibility (Power7 predates HMC versions that manage Power9-and-newer hardware), PowerVM/VIOS levels, storage and PCIe adapter compatibility, IBM i software tier re-pricing under the new processor feature code, and LPAR re-creation on the new console. Plan for that infrastructure work explicitly.
