IBM Power7 End of Support & Risk
IBM Power7 hardware maintenance ended in 2019-2020, IBM i 7.3 -- the last release Power7 can run -- lost standard support in September 2023, and its paid Service Extension itself ends September 30, 2028.
IBM Power7 is not recently obsolete -- it is deeply obsolete, and the timeline matters because it stacks two separate end-of-support events on top of each other. IBM's own hardware maintenance for Power7 ended September 30, 2019, with the POWER7+ refresh models (770 MMD, 780 MHD, 750/8408-E8D) extended to December 31, 2020. Separately, IBM i 7.3 -- the last IBM i release that installs on Power7 hardware at all -- itself lost standard IBM support on September 30, 2023. A paid Service Extension for IBM i 7.3 is available, but only through September 30, 2028.

The IBM i 7.3 ceiling
This is the fact that actually forces a decision. IBM i 7.4 does not install on Power7 hardware at all -- it requires Power8 or later. That makes IBM i 7.3 the permanent software ceiling for any Power7 system, no matter how well the hardware itself is maintained. IBM i 7.3 left standard IBM support in 2023, and even its paid Service Extension runs out in 2028.
If you are running IBM i on Power7 in 2026, you are almost certainly outside IBM's standard support window already, and any Service Extension coverage you have has a hard 2028 expiration. That is a materially different situation from Power8 or Power9, where at least one current IBM i release is still standard-supported on the hardware.
Security and firmware implications
Past each model's end-of-support date, IBM stopped issuing firmware (system microcode) security patches for Power7 hardware. Any firmware-level vulnerability disclosed since 2019-2020 has not been patched by IBM on Power7 systems. The same applies at the OS layer: IBM i 7.3 outside its Service Extension receives no new security PTFs. Third-party maintenance, covered on our maintenance page, keeps the physical hardware running -- it does not restore IBM's firmware or OS patch stream.
Application and ISV compatibility
By 2026, most ISVs have stopped certifying current software releases against IBM i 7.3, and many have dropped active support for it entirely. If you are running commercial applications on Power7, confirm directly with each vendor what their support commitment actually looks like on IBM i 7.3 today -- do not assume continuity because the software still technically runs.
What this means for a decision
A Power7 system still running production workloads in 2026 is not a hypothetical risk story -- every layer of official IBM support has already ended or is on a fixed countdown.
