Identify Your Power7

Match your machine type to its exact IBM Power7 model, specs, and release history before you decide what to do next.

Before you can gauge how obsolete your hardware is, what it's worth, or what replaces it, you need to know exactly what you have. IBM Power7 spans ten machine types still occasionally found in production, from the entry single-socket 710 Express through the 32-socket flagship Power 795. Look up your machine type -- printed on the system label and reported by the HMC -- to find your exact model below. Note that IBM Power7's naming convention does not use the S8xx/S9xx style introduced with Power8 and later; Power7 systems are named directly by model number (710, 720, 730, and so on).

Power 710 Express (8231-E1C / E1D) -- smallest footprint

Entry single-socket Power7, up to 8 cores, 8-64 GB memory. IBM's smallest Power7 rack server.

Power 720 Express (8202-E4B/E4C/E4D) -- entry tower/rack

Single-socket, up to 8 cores, up to 128 GB memory. Common in small IBM i and AIX shops.

Power 730 Express (8231-E2B) -- dual-socket entry

8-16 cores across two sockets, up to 128 GB memory, up to roughly 97,700 CPW at the top processor feature.

Power 740 Express (8205-E6B/E6C/E6D) -- dual-socket scale-out

Up to 16 cores, up to 256 GB memory. The step-up model from the 730 for growing shops.

Power 750 Express (8233-E8B / 8408-E8D) -- 4-socket midrange

4- to 32-core configurations across 4 sockets. The 8408-E8D is the POWER7+ refresh of this model.

Power 755 (8236-E8C) -- HPC cluster node

A 750-derived high-performance-computing node, less commonly found in commercial IBM i/AIX production.

Power 760 (9109-RMD) -- 4-socket enterprise

Introduced in 2011 as a step between the 750 and 770, up to 4 sockets in a single enclosure.

Power 770 (9117-MMB/MMC/MMD) -- modular enterprise

Multi-enclosure modular system, 4-16 sockets across up to 4 nodes, up to 2 TB memory on the MMD (POWER7+) build.

Power 780 (9179-MHB/MHC/MHD) -- flagship modular

IBM's high-end modular Power7 system, 4-16 sockets, TurboCore option for maximum per-core performance.

Power 795 (9119-FHB) -- largest Power7 system

IBM's flagship Power7 enterprise server, up to 32 sockets and 256 cores, withdrawn from marketing February 24, 2015.
