The IBM i 7.3 Ceiling: What It Means for Power7

Updated August 15, 2026

Every Power7 operator eventually runs into the same hard wall: IBM i 7.3 is the newest IBM i release that will install on Power7 hardware, full stop. This single fact does more to force a real decision than any individual hardware end-of-support date.

Why 7.3 is a hard ceiling, not a soft one

IBM i 7.4 requires Power8 or newer hardware as a platform minimum -- there is no firmware update, PTF, or configuration change that unlocks it on Power7. This is a hardware-architecture limitation, not a support-policy choice IBM could reverse.

The compounding timeline

EventDateSignificance
IBM i 7.3 standard support endsSeptember 30, 2023No further PTFs or fixes under standard support terms.
IBM i 7.3 Service Extension windowOctober 1, 2023 - September 30, 2028Paid extended support option; the last officially available support path for IBM i on Power7.
After Service Extension endsOctober 1, 2028No IBM support path for IBM i on Power7 hardware exists at any price.

Dates per IBM's published IBM i support lifecycle documentation.

If you are running IBM i on Power7 today without an active Service Extension contract, you are already outside IBM's support envelope. If you have one, its expiration in 2028 is a firm deadline worth planning around now, not later. See our migration comparison for what a modern replacement looks like.
