What IBM Power7 End of Support Actually Means
"End of support" is one of the most misunderstood phrases in enterprise IT, and Power7 illustrates why it matters over the long run better than any other generation in this portfolio: every current Power7 model passed this milestone years ago, and the hardware is still running at a real number of sites in 2026.

What does not stop
The physical hardware keeps running. IBM i, AIX, or Linux continues to boot and operate exactly as configured. This is why a real, if shrinking, population of Power7 systems is still running production workloads in 2026 -- the risk is cumulative and probabilistic (an eventual hardware failure with no IBM parts commitment, an unpatched firmware vulnerability), not immediate.
Why Power7's situation is more urgent than Power8's
Two stacked deadlines, not one
Power7's hardware support ended in 2019-2020, and its only supported IBM i release (7.3) has already lost standard support too, with a fixed 2028 extension expiry.
No current-OS bridge available
Unlike Power8 (still on IBM i 7.4, itself losing support in 2026), there is no IBM i release on Power7 that is still standard-supported today.
